On June 21, 2019 the federal “National Housing Strategy Act” was passed by the Senate and received Royal Assent.

The National Housing Strategy Act includes the right to housing legislation and a federal requirement to develop and maintain a National Housing Strategy that takes into account a rights-based approach. A legislated right to housing, which was a key recommendation of CHRA throughout the development of the National Housing Strategy, reflects the sustained efforts of countless organizations and partners over the past several years.

Passage of this law puts Canada amongst a small group of countries internationally who have taken a rights-based approach to housing.
